Font selection and color choice are limited intentionally on University Web sites as part of the effort to maintain consistency in how various pages look.

Page text, including headings, body text, and long photo captions (more than one line of text below the photo), should always be left aligned. The only exception is in tables, where some data might be easier to read if it is centered inside a cell.

Fonts

All pages in the RedDot system are set using a limited selection of font faces. Body text is set in the sans-serif font Verdana, while headings and sub-headings are set in the serif font Georgia. Other fonts or extreme font sizes and non-standard formatting (strikethrough, marquee tags, etc.) are not acceptable formatting options.

Colors

The main colors used on Southeast’s Web site are black, red, light gray and white. 

All body paragraphs should be set in black text on a white background. Headings and some sub-headings have a red border on the bottom to stand out. All links should be red. These formatting options are presets available in the RedDot text editor.

The use of background colors is strictly regulated for accessibility purposes; users who are color blind may have trouble reading the text of a page if a background color is paired with a body text that has low contrast in the color range that they can perceive.

Tables

Tables allow the display of information in an organized column and row structure. You can learn how to create tables here.

Tables on your Web site should have a white background with black text. The default border - gray, 1 pixel - works for informational tables; remember that you want people to focus on the information in your table, not on the lines of the table itself.
