How do I propose a new course for inclusion in University Studies?

  1. Visit the Course Approval Procedures on the Provost’s page, http://www.semo.edu/provost/curriculum/course-approval-procedures.htm. New courses must be approved by the appropriate bodies prior to submission to University Studies.  (Course proposers are welcome to contact University Studies during development for guidance and assistance.)
  2. Visit the University Studies Handbook for the current year.  This is obtained online from the University Studies site. Review the University Studies structure and program.  Understand how your proposed course will fit into the University Studies structure.
  3. Obtain the Guidelines for Creating a Course Approval Document (CAD Guidelines, above).
  4. Note that the first portion of the Guidelines very closely mirrors what is contained in the “Course Syllabus Format” on the Provost’s page.
  5. There are a few items on the first page (denoted in green) that are unique to University Studies courses.  The remainder of Sections I – VIII are for all courses.
  6. Please read the instructions for those portions of the CAD that are unique to University Studies courses, including the Appendices.
  7. The completed CAD must be submitted with a completed CAD Cover Sheet.
  8. Submission deadlines are:
    1. September 15th for courses to be scheduled the following Fall semester.
    2. February 15th for courses to be scheduled the following Spring semester.

  2. Visit the University Studies Handbook for the current year.  This is obtained online from the University Studies site. Review the University Studies structure and program.  Understand how your proposed course will fit into the University Studies structure.

University Studies Temporary Course Request

If your department has a course that you want to teach one semester as a University Studies course, please submit an email to Dr. Wayne Bowen (wbowen@semo.edu) with a syllabus for the course.  If he approves the temporary course, please follow these steps:

1.  Get a Temporary Course Approval Document from the Registrar's office, complete the form, and ask your Chairperson to sign it.

2.  Send the form to the University Studies office at Mail Stop 7900 (or you can bring it to Brandt Hall, Room 201).

Dr. Bowen will sign the document, and it will be sent to the Registrar's office.  The Registrar's office will enter the course in Banner.

The University Studies office will contact your department administrative assistant to get details for the semester in which the course will be taught.  Once all information has been obtained, University Studies personnel will enter the course in Banner for the appropriate semester.
