Southeast senior Scott Lane of Jackson, Mo., credits his experience as a finance major in the business administration program with helping him to become a more outgoing, outspoken person.
“Sometime during my time at Southeast,” Scott says, “I became very outspoken and developed a confident take charge attitude. That has helped me to become a leader in a number of student organizations such as Student Government and the Accounting and Finance Club as well as in the classroom. The confidence and capability to speak my opinion and communicate it in a reasonable manner will be an excellent attribute in my future coursework and career.”
Scott’s sense of confidence and his leadership qualities have led him to become involved in a myriad of student organizations. An extremely involved student, Scott has immersed himself in such organizations as the Dean’s Student Advisory Council for the College of Business, the Student Senate, the Student Government Executive Board, the Student Government Finance Committee Chair and the Student Honors Council. He has even served as president of the Financial Management Association and the Accounting and Finance Club. In addition to his involvement on the Southeast campus, he also is involved in the larger community as an active member of the First General Baptist Church in Jackson. For Scott, the life of a university student has been a healthy mixture of classroom excellence and extracurricular involvement.
Lane’s desire to be an active and involved student will help in his new adventure as a part-time law student. He plans to matriculate at St. Louis University’s School of Law in the fall of 2005. His drive and ambition also will serve him well in the workforce. Scott already has had a rewarding internship experience with the Boeing Company in St. Louis, an experience that led to a full-time position as a business analyst, a position he will begin after his expected May 2005 graduation from Southeast.
In addition to his active life on campus, Scott has many hobbies that keep him busy. In addition to playing tennis with his fiancée, he also enjoys weightlifting. He has participated in a number of fund raisers while at Southeast, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association “Lock Up” and the American HeartWalk and Relay for Life.
Scott is a student who appears to have taken full advantage of the rich opportunities afforded by a university education in general and the Southeast experience in particular. Reflecting upon his tenure at Southeast, he offered this advice to future generations of students: “When you get out in life, there is no core curriculum and set path to follow. The core curriculum we have at Southeast touches on that idea and gives us room to find out what we want to do. You just have to go into it with an open mind and a loud voice.”
