If you find yourself having a computer problem, then Dustin Nelson is the guy to solve it. A native of Cape Girardeau, Dustin will graduate from Southeast with a degree in applied computer science and information systems. But Dustin’s time is not all spent routing and re-routing computer programs and information circuits. Aside from watching or participating in sports, Dustin also likes to spend time with his friends and hang out at the Baptist Student Union or his local church.
“Being able to make a difference in other people’s lives is a very rewarding objective for me,” Dustin says. “I have built friendships that I know will go on past college.”
It is his desire to make a difference in the lives of those around him that has taken Dustin to far and distant lands. Dustin has spent two of his college summers in China, and has also spent some time in South America. Although he was 1,000 miles from home, he didn’t worry about feeling isolated or homesick. Dustin was focused on investing in other people, something he always strives to do in his life.
“The people there [China] are amazing,” says Dustin. “I felt at home on the other side of the world.”
Attending Southeast has paved a successful path for Dustin. After he graduates, he would like to pursue a master’s degree from either Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary or Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
“I feel that I have gained the knowledge necessary to successfully enter the work force,” Dustin says. “Not only will I be employed, but I will also know how to give back to others.”
Dustin encourages future Southeast students to attend class and develop an ability to think freely. Developing his own convictions and beliefs is something Dustin has strived to do here at Southeast.
“Free thinking isn’t just accepting your professor’s point of view,” Dustin explains. “Develop your own convictions about life and the way you should live it.”
