Coming 300 miles from Chilhowee, Mo., population 350, to Cape Girardeau, population 40,000, was a big adjustment for Candice Coffey. A senior at Southeast, Candice is a pre-med major and aspires to be a neurosurgeon. She has had great experiences in the classroom and participated in an internship last summer. But Candice says, the best experience for her has been making new friends.
“There were 16 people in my high school graduating class. I have more people than that in a lecture at Southeast, and I love it. Not to mention, I have met lots of new people through being involved outside of class.”
Candice is involved with residence life as a community advisor. Being a community advisor allowed her to meet other community advisors and current students through residence life activities.
“Residence life is a great way to meet new people. It is a diverse community and provides unique experiences. I made some great friends in other CAs and in my fellow residents.”
Being involved in several organizations on campus has allowed Candice to meet students who share her same interests. From the Student Medical Society to her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, she has found there is no limit in the opportunities to make new contacts and lasting friendships.
“I love being a part of Delta Sigma Theta because it has allowed me to meet a lot of women, like me, who are pursuing excellence in education. Through our projects and philanthropic activities, I have been able to serve the community, learn from other people and grow as an individual.”
Coming from a small town, where everyone knew her, Candice is now so involved on campus, almost everyone knows her again. Well maybe not everyone, but she has met a lot of new people, and Candice says, that has made all the difference.
