Brian Whitehead just graduated from Southeast with a degree in environmental science and is now working on a master’s degree in biology. At Southeast, Brian was involved in a number of organizations on campus and ran cross-country and track, all while maintaining his Governor’s Scholarship for the entire four years. But he says one of his best experiences was getting involved in Student Government.
Student Government is the representative organization for the entire student body at Southeast. The organization enhances student life by providing a communication link between the students and administration. Brian says it is a great opportunity to stay up to date on university policy and get involved.
“Student Government is the official voice of the students when it comes to University administration and policy. Student Government appoints students to various University committees and makes recommendations on behalf of students to many different offices on campus.”
Student Government has not only allowed Brian to be involved in University policy and administration, but has also been an opportunity to meet and interact with other students on campus. Serving as the treasurer of Student Government, Brian was responsible for funding for student organizations on campus.
“Each year, student government has funding to sponsor programs and educational activities, bring in speakers and performers, such as Toby Keith and Smashmouth. These activities make the campus a lively and exciting place and allow students to interact outside of the classroom.”
During his involvement with Student Government, Brian has worked on a number of major issues on campus, such as six-week grade reports, recycling programs, new computer systems, mascot discussions and tuition rates. Brian says his involvement with Student Government has been very worthwhile.
“Being involved in Student Government is beneficial because of the influence students can have on the University and its policies as well as the connections made to influential students, faculty and staff. I have done so many interesting things through Student Government. It has been a huge part of my college experience.”
