Violet Lashmet Enjoys "Taking Care of the Kids"

Custodian, Facilities Management
Violet Lashmet

Violet Lashmet says it’s important to “let the kids know you care about them.”

She approaches her work each day as the primary custodian in Crisp Hall with that philosophy. For this she was honored with a 2010 Employee Recognition Award representing the University’s bargaining units.

Violet is a 10-year veteran of the Facilities Management Division.

According to her nomination, Lashmet “demonstrates a caring attitude in regard to the safety and aesthetics of the building.  She takes care of the building as though it were her personal living space. Often, there are potential safety hazards of which faculty and staff are unaware.  Violet identifies these situations, alerts the staff and works with the building manager to notify appropriate personnel.  In recognition of her knowledge, she has been included in decisions about floor coverings for classrooms and related remodeling planning.  Violet’s work has definitely contributed to enhancing the academic program.”

Violet, who also cleans the Johnson Faculty Centre, says “I love taking care of the kids and talking to them.”

She says the students “make me feel great,” and it’s this atmosphere that makes her position enjoyable. She says she also enjoys her coworkers and learning new aspects of her job every day.

Violet, who lives in Scott City, Mo., is graduate of Cape Central High School and the former Cape Girardeau Vocational/Technical School. Outside of her work, she says she like to walk, go to the movies and work crossword puzzles. She also loves visiting her best friend in San Diego, Calif.
