CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 17, 2011 -- KRCU host and producer Jacob McCleland recently received an award from the Outreach and Education Division of Missouri Department of Conservation at a ceremony held in Columbia, Mo. The award recognizes McCleland’s work on “Discover Nature,” the audio counterpart of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Natural Events Calendar.
“Discover Nature” explores new marvels to look for in the outdoors and highlights these attractions. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s Candice Davis hosts the program and narrates stories of river otters, luna moths, redbuds and other actors as they take center stage in nature’s theatre. McCleland is the producer for the weekly program.
“Jacob’s passion for conservation shows through the quality of his work and his enthusiasm to seek out conservation-related news and feature opportunities,” Davis said. “He is constantly working to inform Missourians about our region’s rich natural diversity, and his personal efforts go a long way toward enriching Missourian’s quality of life through conservation.”
The Outreach and Education Partnership Award recognizes an individual or group for their efforts in collaborating with Outreach and Education staff in programming, media and information, interpretation and outdoor skills. In addition to his work on “Discover Nature,” McCleland has produced feature stories on a wide range of conservation subjects, including sand prairie restoration, elk and alligator gar restoration and Missouri’s endangered grotto sculpin.
“It is a great honor to receive this award,” McCleland said. “I’ve always been attracted to the outdoors, so it made perfect sense to forge a relationship with Missouri Department of Conservation. I’ve been fortunate to work with Candice Davis and all the other folks at the Cape Girardeau Missouri Department of Conservation office.”
“Discover Nature” airs Mondays at 7:49 a.m. and 5:59 p.m. on KRCU and is supported by a grant from the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation.
