Students at Southeast attended a wilderness first responders certification course offered by the Southeast Missouri State University department of extended and continuing education. Students participated in an intensive 80-hour course over the span of 9 days to learn how to respond to emergency situations that are often encountered in remote areas. First responder skills are important for students seeking employment as forest rangers, scout leaders, parks and recreational employees. Through the program students learn how to make quick decisions and take action to perform CPR, treat shock and other first aid techniques. Quick thinking and application of this training can mean the difference between life and death for these students and those in their care.
