15th Annual Clark Terry / Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival - featuring Reggie Thomas, piano
The 15th Annual Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival will be held at the Southeast River Campus (near the campus of Southeast Missouri State University) on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9, 2013. Our guest artist will be Reggie Thomas, incredible pianist on the staff at Michigan State University. High School, Junior High and Middle School bands are cordially invited to participate!
The performance and clinic venue will be the fabulous Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus. The festival format (non-contest) rewards all groups by providing both recorded and written comments by expert adjudicators. We've gone DIGITAL! Recorded comments are now burned onto a single CD, no more cassette tapes! In addition, a short educational clinic will be provided for each ensemble following its performance by our expert adjudicators. Each band will be adjudicated and rated as Superior, Excellent, Good or Fair by experts in the jazz big band field. Trophies will be given to each band and individual citations will be presented for outstanding musicians within each ensemble.
On Friday at noon, our Studio Jazz Ensemble will perform along with guest artist Reggie Thomas in a short, mini-concert. Clinics with Reggie Thomas will be scheduled during the day on both days of the festival. Friday evening we will feature both Southeast big bands in a gala concert featuring Reggie as soloist. All bands who stay to hear at least three other ensembles will receive free tickets to this event!
Reginald ("Reggie") Thomas joined the Michigan State University College of Music as professor of jazz (piano) in 2011 after nearly 20 years as professor of music at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He regularly appears as a guest artist at collegiate jazz festivals around the country, including those hosted by Lawrence University, the University of South Florida, and Texas Tech University. He has also performed internationally in Canada, Italy, Poland, Senegal, and England. He can be seen fronting his own groups (Mardra/Reggie Thomas Ensemble; OGD) on both piano and Hammond organ and performing with other artists including Ann Hampton Callaway and the Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker Project. His recordings include work with Clay Jenkins, Kim Richmond, and Clark Terry/Mike Vax, as well as his own recordings "Fade to Blue" with his wife, Mardra (MaxJazz), "Standard Time" (Victoria) and "4" (Jazz Compass). He is also a consultant/clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center, working with the Essentially Ellington Program and the Band Director Academy. He has served on several summer jazz faculties across the country and abroad including the International Association for Jazz Education Teacher Training Institute, the Birch Creek Music Center, the Eastman School of Music Summer Jazz Camp, the Summer Jazz Academy in Chodziez, Poland, and, most recently, the Barbican Center in London.
The registration fee for this festival will be $170 for your first band and $115 for each band thereafter. Bands will be scheduled at 35 minute intervals which will include set-up time, performance time, clinic time and tear-down time. Jazz combos also are invited to perform. Adjudicator's comment sheets and CD, outstanding musician certificates, trophies, and CD recording will be awarded. To encourage more groups to listen, all bands who stay for at least three ensembles will receive comp tickets to the Friday evening gala concert. High School-age male vocalists are invited to join conductor Dr. Peter J. Durow for a one day festival culminating in a performance by the high school Men's Festival Chorus, the University Choir (Dr. Peter J. Durow, conductor), and the men of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. The purposes of the Men's FestivalChoir are multi-faceted and include study of vocal technique, rehearsal procedure and performance practice. Junior and Senior singers may also take advantage of a brief mini lesson with a member of Southeast's voice faculty.
Saturday, October 6, 2012 New this year – rehearsals will be in the Shuck recital hall with the final concert at 5:30 PM in the Bedell performance hall.

MUSIC WILL BE LEARNED AND PERFORMED IN ONE DAY
The required fee of $20 per student includes a music folder and lunch. A T-shirt may also be purchased in advance with your registration for an additional $10. T-shirt orders must be made in advance. Summer Chamber Music Institute
Join us for the first annual Southeast Chamber Music Institute, an intensive three-day experience at Southeast Missouri State's beautiful River Campus.
Designed for talented and motivated performers on violin, viola, cello, string bass, guitar, flute and piano, the Institute will comprise recitals, masterclasses, private lessons, practice time, performance health sessions, and the opportunity to collaborate with a contemporary composer.
Institute faculty will include internationally active performers and teachers, such as Ken Kulosa of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. The Southeast Chamber Music Institute runs from July 12th to 14th 2012. Early application is recommended.
