In keeping with our commitment to experiential learning, the Office of Residence Life and university partners are proud to support the Service Learning Community in Merick hall. Any major is welcome to be part of the community and students only need an interest in learning more about service in the campus and local community.
Students participating in this learning community will live within a diverse group and have hands on experience learning about civic responsibility and service learning. The goal of this community is to increase students’ knowledge of local, national, and international issues and to create an understanding of and respect for civic responsibility.
Clearly, the focus of this program will be community service, and will include opportunities to contribute to the campus, to the Cape Girardeau community, our region, our state, and even our country. Students should be open to new experiences, willing to learn, and eager to share their own experience with their peers.
Sample Activities (activities are not final and will be planned by staff and faculty associated with the program):
- Workshops and Lectures
- Brown Bag Series
- How to Select a Graduate Program/School
- Service Projects
- Habitat for Humanity Builds
- Boys and Girls Club
- Academic Initiatives
- Field Trips: Local and regional community events
- Career Opportunities in Community Service
- Social Events
- BBQ with faculty and staff partners
- Floor dinners
To sign up for this community, returning students should participate in the Priority Sign-Up process. New students should indicate their preference for this community on their Contract for University Housing and then fill out and return the application that they receive in the mail.
There is no extra cost associated with the Learning Community Program; however, students are expected to sign and agree to a set of expectations for living in a Learning Community. This will be available at the time of Priority Sign-Up (returning students) or included in the application packet (new students).
The Office of Residence Life is proud to partner with the various University partners to offer the Service Learning Community as a housing option. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (573) 651-2274 or residencelife@semo.edu.
