Campus Life & Events Services is seeking a Student Engagement Graduate Assistant for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement is responsible for providing support to a variety of functions within the Office of Campus Life and Event Services. This role requires the GA to be on-site for programming/events during some evening and weekend hours.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to department, division and University-wide events including:
    • Opening Week
    • Family Weekend and Homecoming
    • Speakers Series
    • Safe Zone
    • Friday Night Leadership, President’s Leadership Academy, Emerging Leaders, and other leadership initiatives
  • Maintain daily office hours as scheduled.
  • Assist with the supervision, management, and evaluation of volunteer outreach and resources programs.
  • Assist in the coordination, management, and evaluation of days of service including events like Southeast Gives Back, Friends of the Park, Service Fair, etc. 
  • Aid in the maintenance of volunteer hour records for all organized events.
  • Coordinate service projects with student organizations, sports clubs, and Greek organizations, where appropriate.
  • Develop and organize a volunteer recognition program.
  • Conduct Student Organization Registration Sessions with organization presidents. This would include initial training sessions in August and additional sessions, as needed, throughout the year.
  • Assist in publicizing of events and activities via social media.
  • Others as determined by supervisor

College of Education Advising Office

The College of Education Advising Office is seeking a graduate assistant for the 2013-2014 academic year. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Advising a small load of current pre-education majors
  • Assist pre-education majors in regards to major changes
  • Answering routine advising questions from students
  • Holding regular office hours in Advising Office
  • Initiate Block enrollment and set-up in Banner
  • Perform course checks for Block classes and Student Teaching
  • Assist Advising Coordinator at FirstSTEP and Transfer orientations
  • Work with IT to set up a more efficient and professional appointment-scheduling system

Required qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Willing to be trained in Banner
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Seeking a graduate degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Education, Psychology, or related field
  • Available for 2 academic years
  • Detail-oriented work ethic

Department of Public Services/ Publications

There will be a GA position available in the Department of Public Services/Publications beginning Fall 2013.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Draft information for University publications, including:
    • Recruitment materials
    • Collateral materials scholarship program
    • First Step and orientation materials
    • Speakers Series brochure and ads
    • Foundation campaign materials (as needed)
    • Research and printed materials for president's office
    • Show Me Day promotions
    • College brochures

    • Materials that go to new and prospective students
  • Research information from our own University publications and Web, from other university websites to compare programs and marketing potential, and from U.S. Department of Labor websites. Ongoing research of publications, advertising and marketing materials from competing universities.
  • Schedule and assist with photo shoots for use in recruiting and other promotional materials. Photography skills are helpful.
  • Assist the director and publications staff in all levels of the publications and advertising process.

Health, Human Performance, and Recreation Department

There will be two GA positions open for the Nutrition and Exercise Science Graduate program within the Health, Human Performance, and Recreation Department.

Southeast Missouri State University offers graduate assistantships to qualified candidates interested in pursuing the Master's Degree in Nutrition and Exercise Science. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate level courses, health perspectives and exercise physiology laboratory, and research laboratory assistance. Applicants should have a degree in an allied health field; preferably with a focus in exercise science. Students may select either the thesis or non-thesis option in preparation to pursue a doctoral degree in a related field or to work in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, wellness programs and/or sports nutrition. This program is an interdisciplinary offering of the Departments of Health, Human Performance and Recreation and Human Environmental Studies. Coursework emphasizes prevention of lifestyle diseases, exercise physiology, metabolism and research methods. Assistantship offers are contingent upon acceptance by applicants into the Graduate School. This position will remain open until filled.

History Department

There are two competitive Graduate Assistanships available in the Department of History. Preference will be given to applicants with a background in history and/or public history and who possess the ability to assist in undergraduate teaching. Graduate assistantships cover a full tuition and fees waiver for up to 24 hours of graduate coursework annually as well as paying a stipend of $7,752 per year. Office of Greek Life 

The Graduate Assistant - Greek Life is a full-time student that serves as a staff member reporting to the Office of Greek Life. They assist in providing support to the university’s national Greek letter fraternities and sororities. The Graduate Assistant - Greek Life has secondary responsibilities with the Office of Residence Life, to assist with the student development programming within the Greek Area. With the goal to enhance student development, the Graduate Assistant assumes the following Greek Life functions:

  1.  Student Development
    1. Advising/Leadership Development
      1. Attend meetings and serve as the advisor to the three Greek councils and the Greek Honor Society (IFC, Panhellenic, NPHC, & Order of Omega).
      2. Assist in the planning and implementation of training programs and leadership retreats related to the governing bodies.
      3. Meet with executive members, as needed, to discuss issues or areas of concern.
      4. Promote new student involvement in Greek organizations at fairs, displays, and appointments with students.
      5. Assist in the planning of the new member orientation and fall officer training.
      6. Meet with chapter presidents at least twice per semester to assist in their leadership development, address any chapter concerns, assist with chapter development, succession planning, and membership recruitment.
      7. Ability to serve as a role model for undergraduate students and alumni volunteers.
    2. Programming
      1. Serve as a resource to students with regard to needs assessment, planning, and implementing programs.
      2. Assist students with proper written evaluation of programs and provide feedback to students regarding their programming efforts.
      3. Assist the Director of Greek Life with the coordination of fraternity and sorority recruitment weeks, Greek Week, and other Greek-wide sponsored events.
      4. Coordinate educational programs for the Greek community members on risk management and membership accountability. Topics including but not limited to: hazing, alcohol/substance abuse, sexual assault/responsibility, relationship violence, racism, diversity, heterosexism, interfraternalism, and scholarship.
    3. Counseling
      1. Become familiar with students - their individual and group needs, concerns, etc. - through regular contact and outreach programs.
      2. Assist individuals and groups of students with personal problems and concerns.
      3. Act as a referral agent when appropriate with regard to student problems.
    4. Conduct
      1. Maintain a thorough working knowledge of the discipline system as described in the conduct manual.
      2. Investigate all reports of violations, damages, thefts, etc. Follow up with students to determine accuracy.
  2. Administrative and Operational Functions
    1. Administration
      1. Establish and maintain effective student, staff, and community relationships/partnerships.
      2. Develop relationships (academic & administrative) with other departments that will ultimately enhance service, student programs, and co-curricular education of the Greek community.
      3. Assist with the development of policies and procedures and communication within the Greek community.
    2. Assessment
      1. Develop and implement assessment outcomes for Greek-related events and programs.
      2. Assist with recordkeeping of chapter rosters, program attendance, etc.
    3. General Responsibilities
      1. Serve as an active member of the Greek Life office, attend meetings, and contribute to departmental goals and objectives.
      2. Assist with the coordination of the fraternity/sorority activities calendar.
      3. Be available to students and staff on a daily basis.
      4. Establish and maintain regularly scheduled office hours each week.
      5. Participate in/attend all major Greek Life and University functions.
      6. Assume other duties as directed.
  3. Knowledge and Skills
    1. Strong organization, communication (written and oral), and leadership skills.
    2. Understanding of social Greek organizations and self-governance models.
    3. Demonstrated knowledge of effective and ethical IFC, Panhellenic, & NPHC practices.
    4. Demonstrated presentation skills.
    5. Ability to work independently and meet multiple task deadlines.
    6. Knowledge of student leadership development and training.
    7. Understanding of and commitment to a multicultural/diverse campus community.
    8. Awareness of and commitment to the mission of Greek Life at Southeast Missouri State University.
    9. Background in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  4. Requirements and Compensation
    1. Qualifications
      1. Admission to Southeast's graduate school and enrolled in a graduate course of study.
      2. Membership in a Greek organization is strongly preferred.
    2. Tuition & Stipend
      1. Tuition for 24 credits (9-fall, 9-spring, 6-summer).
      2. Bi-weekly stipend.
    3. Housing
      1. Apartment in the residence hall (when available).

GA for Residence Hall Operations
The Graduate Assistant for Residence Hall Operations is a full-time student that serves as the primary staff member responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Towers Customer Service Desk and night security services for the Office of Residence Life. This is a live-on position, which involves a level of accessibility and accountability to all students and staff, and includes management of situations and emergencies, which may occur at any time of day or night. Graduate Hall Director
The Graduate Hall Director is a full-time student that serves as a live-in professional staff member with the Office of Residence Life. They are the primary staff member responsible for the student development program within the residence hall, including supervision and advisement of student staff and student hall government, program development and implementation, and administration. Graduate Hall Director - Greek Area
The Graduate Hall Director-Greek Area is a full-time student that serves as a live-in professional staff member with the Office of Residence Life. They are the primary staff member responsible for the student development program within the area, including supervision and advisement of student staff and area government, program development and implementation, and administration. The Graduate Hall Director-Greek Area has secondary responsibilities with the Office of Greek Life, to include possible advisement of a Greek council and assistance with office programming.
