Re: 2004-5 Faculty Senate Membership Committee Report
The Faculty Senate Membership Committee consisted of Bruce Hathaway (Chair), Carolyn Rainey, Min Zou, Janice Chadha, Pat Willingham, Ronald Clayton, and Mack Wilson.
We accomplished the normal things that the committee does. We filled the vacancies on the Faculty Senate Legislative and Reporting Committees, and found capable people to chair those committees. We solicited volunteers to serve on the various University Standing Committees and Councils, and recommended individuals to the appropriate administrators for appointments on those committees. We identified faculty senators whose terms were up, or who were retiring, and initiated the process for electing senators in those units. New Senators and alternates are shown in the following table.

The departments of Social Work and of Nursing will be having elections within the next week.
As elections were being conducted, we discovered that there is some confusion over whether a full-time faculty member needs to be tenured or tenure-track, or just full-time, to be eligible to be a senator. There are two different versions of the requirements on two different web-sites.
(http://www2.semo.edu/provost/handbook/facultyHandbook2004.pdf) says:
“All full-time faculty members who have completed one academic year of service at this University are eligible to be candidates for the position of department unit representative.”
Whereas, (http://www2.semo.edu/provost/handbook/viii.htm#A7) says:
“All full-time probationary tenure-track and tenured faculty members who have completed one academic year of service at this University are eligible to be candidates for the position of departmental unit representative.”
This discrepancy needs to be cleared up, and the incorrect information changed. Since the first site seems to be the latest, we assumed it was the correct one.
