Internships
An internship is a work experience in which the student learns by taking on a responsible role as a workers in an organization and reflects on what happens while in that role.
Internships are available for 1, 2 or 3 semester hours of credit. Fifty hours of time at the internship site is expected for each semester hour of credit.
A limited number of internship contacts in the Cape Girardeau area are available. Students who wish to complete an internship in the St. Louis region are expected to secure their own internship.
Prerequisites for a Finance Internship are completion of 9 hours of finance course work. For Economics Internship, 12 hours of economics course work are required as prerequisites.
Once the internship site has been secured, a contract must be completed and signed by the student, faculty internship supervisor and on-site supervisor. Internship credit is then added to the student's class schedule. After the on-site hours are completed, the student is expected to write a paper that provides some reflection upon the internship experience. An evaluation form is sent to the on-site supervisor. Once all documents are received in the department office, a grade of "credit" or "no credit" is recorded for the student.

Research Opportunities
Economics majors have the opportunity to participate in research projects sponsored by the Center for Economic and Business Research. Past projects have included the cost of noncompletion of high school in southeast Missouri, the economic impact of the child care industry in Missouri and the economic impact of Southeast Missouri State University upon the local economy. Students engaged in the research project are able to present the research at professional economics conferences and the papers have been published in economics journals.

Student Portfolio
Students enrolled in FI568, Portfolio Seminar, have the opportunity to manage a REAL financial portfolio with a value exceeding $600,000. This gives students an excellent opportunity to get experience in financial decision making, and their decisions impact the value of the portfolio.
In addition, student involved in the portfolio management have the opportunity to take an expense paid trip to New York or a conference related to portfolio management.

Student Journal
