Priority 4: To enhance the University community.
I. Improve Student View of the College
- Improve Student Satisfaction:
All students should have a positive learning/personal growth experience in this College and view all College personnel as helpful to them in achieving their personal goals. Student satisfaction to be monitored using a selected instrument (e.g., college exit poll of graduating seniors or survey of alumni). The level of financial support from alumni to College should be used as a measure of loyalty.
- Improve student learning experience:
Establish college-level seminars on an annual basis. Sponsor college-level job forums in cooperation with the Office of Career Services. Increase funding and support for department learning centers, with the potential for expanding into new space as it becomes available. Provide all classrooms with appropriate tech packages, including the addition of networked computer terminals where necessary. Provide a student study lounge where all students within the college can gather, fostering a sense of community among the student body. In addition, provide outdoor study benches and tables (e.g., in Magill courtyard and Johnson, Magill and Rhodes common area).
II. Work Environment
- Support faculty professional growth:
All faculty and staff should see the college as having a positive work environment, supportive of them in fulfilling their respective roles and in helping them achieve their personal goals. Individual and unit annual reports will reflect improvement trends in professional and personal growth.
- Provide computer support:
Provide all faculty/staff with up-to-date computing hardware and software.
- Support new faculty start-up:
Continue and expand start-up funding for new faculty.
- Maintain and upgrade equipment:
Continue to add, maintain and replace equipment as needed, with financial support from external agencies (e.g., NSF and NIH) and internal resources.
- Provide additional space:
A survey was conducted in fall 1998 to assess the current status of college facilities to accurately determine present and future needs. This information was used to generate a college-wide assessment (Appendix A). Develop departmental plans, in consultation with the dean's office and chairperson's committee, to expand into space as it becomes available. Provide all current faculty/staff with adequate office, lab, research and classroom space. Provide all teaching assistants with office and research space and a desk for their needs.
- Plan for renovation:
Continue renovation and reorganization of the basement area of Magill for more effective use of this space. Renovate Magill and Johnson Halls to provide quality office, research and classroom space. Provide headquarters for the environmental science program.
III. Governance Structure
- Maintain an interactive decision making process:
Maintain a college governance structure that is clear, efficient, effective, inclusive and that promotes cooperation. Continue to allow faculty/staff to provide input regarding decisions involving allocation of resources, merit, promotion, etc.
- Improve communication:
Improve cooperation and communication between departments, especially involving curricular matters.
