Congratulations to Brooke Clubbs!
Instructor Brooke Hildebrand Clubbs had an essay published in the February 22nd edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education. In it, she describes the challenges of maintaining civil discourse when discussing controversial issues in the classroom...especially when influenced by Facebook memes and YouTube videos, some students have difficulty recognizing that all "facts" are not created equal.
Congratulations Dr. Summary!
Dr. Jennifer Summary’s latest publication is a review of Multilingualism: Understanding Linguistic Diversity in the Journal of Language and Social Psychology. Dr. Summary has been quite active this academic year, having published eight entries in scholarly encyclopedias. She also has just received news that an article growing out of her dissertation has been accepted for publication. Congratulations Dr. Summary!
Dr. Jennifer Summary To Present
This spring Dr. Jennifer Summary will be attending the International Academy of Business Disciplines in the Special Panel Division, Atlanta, GA. She will be presenting the following paper Public Speaking, Pupils, and Prezi! Oh My! for the Instructional Resource Interest Group.
Dr. Slavica Kodish to Present
Dr. Slavica Kodish will be attending the annual convention of the Southern States Communication Association, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Kodish will be presenting on the panel entitled “Choices and Consequences in Active Learning.”
SEMO Debate Team
The Debate team is open to any student regardless of previous experience. The team meets every Tuesday from 4-6:30 pm in Pacific Hall 201. Students may receive academic credit for participation by enrolling in SC 360. Faculty advisor: Dr. Larry Underberg may be contacted at lunderberg@semo.edu
University of Dayton tournament, Spring '13:
Cody Baker and Megan Moore placed 4th in the Varsity Corssfire. Megan Moore placed 5th overall in the whole of the Varsity League.
Debate Wins Big at Redhawk Rumble!
Students and faculty from as far away as New Jersey partcipated in the first Redhawk Rumble debate tournament held last Saturday on the SEMO campus. Southeast Debators Rebecca Baylor and Dylan Splean defeated Ball State University in the championship round to win the varsity division of crossfire debate. Teammates Cody Baker and Megan Moor joined Baylor and Splean to win four of the five top speaker honors in their divisions. Institutions participating in the tournament included Clemson Univeristy (South Carolina), Capital University (Ohio), University of Dayton (Ohio), Ball State University (Indiana), Anderson University (Indiana), Saint Peters University (New Jersey), and Southeast. All schools are members of the National Educational Debate Association. The event was a success, according to the director of debate, Dr. Larry Underberg, who noted that "over 30 people from the campus and community volunteered to serve as guest judges at the event." The next outing for the debate team will be the national tournament at Clemson University, March 7-9.
Williams’ Work in a Book of Conference Proceedings
Dr. Williams presented a competitively selected paper at an international research conference convened in Dublin, Ireland. His work has been selected as one of the papers to be included in a book of conference proceedings. His essay is titled Harnessing Visual Educational Resources to Better Realize Pedagogical Objectives and will appear in the book Digital Literacies in Higher Education published by Peter Lang.
Bob Clubbs Promoting Civic Engagement
Bob Clubbs, a Communication Studies dual-credit teacher at Jackson High School held a debate watch party and encouraged his students to "tweet it up". The story was featured of KFVS 12. Conferences Attended By Our Faculty
Dr. Roseanna Whitlow-Greenwood attended the Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri 80th Annual Conference, where she served as Mentor for “new” communication educators. This is Whitlow-Greenwood’s 40th year as a member of STAM.
Dr. Glen Williams attended the 2012 Public Address Conference, themed “On Civic Learning.” His involvement at the conference will help inform his scholarly activity as well as his work on the third edition of a text he co-authors, titled Public Speaking and Civic Engagement, published by Pearson.
Brooke Clubbs and Dr. Slavica Kodish both attended the National Communication Association's annual convention, themed "Celebrate COMMunity". Brooke Clubbs presented on a panel discussion focused on the discourses surrounding women and their birthing bodies. Dr. Kodish presented her paper titled "Trust as a Building Block to Community".
