Retention in the Teacher Education Program
To maintain active status in the Teacher Education Program, students must remain in good standing in the Teacher Education Program. For full retention policies and appeals procedures please contact your advisor. The following conditions must be satisfied:
- A minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average must be maintained. Failure to maintain the 2.5 minimum G.P.A. may result in the student being placed on programmatic probation, being suspended from the program until grade deficiencies are removed, or being dropped from the Teacher Education Program.
- Students must earn a grade of C or better in all professional education courses, must have a G.P.A. of 2.5 in all professional education course work, a G.P.A. of 2.5 in the academic discipline in which certification is sought (when applicable) and must be in good standing (not on probation) before being permitted to student teach. In the event a student receives a grade of less than C in a professional education course, that course must be repeated with a grade of C or better being earned. Professional education courses may only be repeated one time.
- Students must earn grades of C or better and maintain a 2.5 G.P.A. in the academic discipline in which certification is sought.
- Secondary candidates, including K-12 programs based on the secondary format, must have completed a minimum of 75 percent of the hours (coursework) required in the major with no grade lower than C prior to student teaching.
- Students must be judged as having met prescribed program competencies. These competencies follow the Missouri Performance Based Teacher Evaluation model.
- A student will be permitted to repeat courses in professional education one time only. A second failure to attain a grade of "C" or better in a professional education course will result in permanent suspension from the program.
- The portfolio requirement must be met before graduation. (Specified background checks will be required.)
- No felony convictions will be permitted and students may not be on disciplinary suspension.
